Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
