The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
