The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
