Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
