This production, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed image promoted by official channels that, domestically, it reads as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” the nation from disorder. While the character's name Mikhail, the message is clear: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in buttressing this identical story instead of undercutting it. A new film based on a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, these events took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a selection process with many contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

• According to a journalist who studied his rise, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: loyal, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “007” may in part have been inspired by the actor's arrival as James Bond. The grittier version prompted local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. He is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it might seek to question.
