The boxing world has been a real slump this year, with few major fights and far less engaging contests than usual. The anticipation of a important and captivating heavyweight battle between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. He always gets up but Wardley punches with greater force than anyone he has faced – with the exclusion of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only started boxing when he was twenty, had no amateur boxing history and has consistently faced doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the most important contest, right now, in the heavyweight class. Both these fighters have accepted the challenge when neither of them had to agree to this match. Joe Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have already ordered the champion to fight him, but he was hurt. Joseph is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘No.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it provides him a shot to accelerate his path.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and what he has done and how he has prepared for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am going to show it on fight night.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the two of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my career and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no different. The gap between Parker's level and my perceived standing has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a lot of fights on his resume. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a significant time and had some heavy fights. I've also endured brutal fights and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those than me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the general belief is that Parker will be too experienced, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a comfortable distance.
