Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
