For the Cashier That Left Me Totally Wordless – Kudos to You

The scene was a weekend morning, and I found myself grumpy enough, topping off my mother's vehicle. It was a typical gas station that operates as a supermarket, which often leads of ending up in line people bearing baskets of somewhat expensive items. This is a dreadful thing to occur when your only desire is to complete a simple refueling. Terrible.

I was fourth among those waiting. There was only person serving, a young woman. There was something unusual to her presence. When the faffer at the head of the line had completed payment for a cleaning product, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, I was certain I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Unusual. Perhaps I’d misheard, or perhaps she spoke and was being sarcastic. I pondered if perhaps she was a supporter in the war on delays, echoing my disdain for those who delay simple fuel-buyers like me.

Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The next shopper of our line completed her gasoline purchase with commendable speed. And there it was again: “Have a wonderful day.” In fact, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. An American? At this location? The pronunciation indicated it, and few locals tells people a wonderful day, or even just a nice day. Quite out of place. Rarely does one encounter people from America knocking around Stourbridge, least of all holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else.

I was second now. After an elderly lady embroiled in a protracted effort with her basket, her food items, her handbag and her rewards card. It went on for ever. When she was done, she too was wished a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by cracking a joke at the cashier, to observe that thing as they gaze at you, stoically, and reply with genuine earnest: “You are very amusing.” But I couldn’t think of anything hilarious to say.

I just had to settle for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, which amounts to identical in effect – while she stared straight at me, deep into my soul, and bid me to have a great day. My spirits lifted. It was a good thing.
